A Dirty Book Affair Presents the Author of the Month – Lori Brighton
**KEEP READING FOR A GIVEAWAY FROM LORI!!**
As most of you may know adirtybookaffair.com is a new personal blog that I felt passionate about starting. From the first day I decided to pursue my love of blogging about great reads and authors, this wonderful author has assisted in providing me with tips and encouragement. Having been a favorite author of mine and having had her support for my blog from the first day, I wanted to feature her as the VERY FIRST ADBA AUTHOR OF THE MONTH!!! And I am honestly feeling like a giddy little girl who has met (in this case via the virtual world) a favorite celeb!!! And in pure Lori Brighton fashion…she has honored me with an interview and giveaway!
A Few of Lori’s Books:
YA Paranormal: The Mind Readers Series (The Mind Readers, The Mind Thieves, and Mind Games)
Historical Romance (**ADULT BOOKS ONLY - RATED R**): The Seduction Series (To Seduce an Earl);
The Night Series (A Night of Secrets); The Wild Series (Wild Heart, Wild Desire)
ADBA: What or who influenced you to become a writer?
LB: My mom is a huge reader, so she certainly influenced me. Like many people I didn’t have the perfect childhood so I used reading and my imagination to escape reality. But at some point during my school years I got it into my head that I wasn’t good at writing. So although I was constantly making up stories I never thought to write them down. In my teens I discovered Julie Garwood historical romances and totally fell in love! It wasn’t until I was in my upper twenties when I had run out of my favorite author’s books that I decided to try and write a book of my own.
ADBA: If I weren’t an author I’d be……. (finish the sentence)
LB: A museum curator! That’s what I was before I became a writer and I loved it! I learned so much, and really grew to appreciate how many amazing things there are in the world.
ADBA: Do you have any personal connections to the names that select for your characters?
LB: Coming up with names is always difficult and I’ve often found myself using the same names over without even realizing it! But a year or so ago I started researching my family tree and realized it could be a great resource for names and they’d be historical accurate! So I’ve started using names from my family tree.
ADBA: Any advice for those looking to become authors?
LB: Never has it been a better time to be an author. Self-publishing has opened the door for so many new authors and has given struggling authors (as I was) the chance to actually be in charge of their own careers and make a real living. Two years ago I didn’t know what I was going to do! I couldn’t get a NY contract to save my life. But you never know what is going to happen so you can’t give up. I believe in making your own destiny and if you try and improve and keep trying, it will happen. You have to want it hard enough and you can’t be afraid of work. And take criticism with a grain of salt because you will get A LOT of criticism. If it’s helpful then use it, if not then toss it and don’t take it personally. This is harder than it seems!
ADBA: Describe your writing style in 5 words
LB: Suspenseful, adventurous, romantic, sexy, hopeful.
ADBA: Any genre that you haven’t tried yet that you’d like to?
LB: Yes! Contemporary Romance. I’d like to write some sexy contemporary romances, akin to Harlequin Presents. I’ve also got an idea for a Young Adult that’s a bit more fantasy than paranormal.
ADBA: What’s your favorite book and who’s your favorite author
LB: There are too many! When I was a teen I loved the Anne of Green Gables series and The Chronicles of Narnia. Then I discovered Julie Garwood and she became my favorite romance writer.
